Plastic is actually a very versatile material.
It is easier to process than metal.
It is lighter than metal.
It is more flexible than metal.
Plastic is also not as sensitive to temperature changes as metal ones because of their low thermal conductivity. Because it possesses such properties, plastic is widely used in everyday products. Even that plastic has its “enemies”. That is the difficulty of product design. From a product design perspective, the advantages mentioned earlier present the following challenges:
Being easier to process means it softens at lower temperatures than metal, which means it is prone to shape changes with temperature fluctuations.
Being lightweight results in a lower density than metal, providing less rigidity and causing warping due to an inability to withstand thermal shrinkage (warping).
Being flexible means it is difficult to precisely control dimensions.
The property of low thermal conductivity also leads to uneven cooling during processing in products with variations in thickness. Most of these are related to shape changes in the product, such as warping or sink marks.
Starlite’s MBD is the solution to solve such problems instantly. The technology enables high-speed simulation verification of resin design, structural analysis, resin molding, and various product functionality checks. Why does this shape cause warping? How does temperature change affect shape retention? Can stable injection molding be achieved with this shape? As a functional part, can it perform properly? You can check all these questions with our MBD.
