Plastic Experts Share Their Little Stories (Vol. 2): Plastic Is a Bundle of Strings.

Plastic, also known as a polymer, is a material composed of molecules linked together in a chain-like fashion that have a specific structure. The length of the molecule significantly impacts the plastic’s performance. For example, thermoplastic resins that soften when heated and harden when cooled have the following characteristics:

  1. The longer the molecule, the more it entangles with other molecules, resulting in higher strength.
→ It is difficult to untangle like a tangled ball of long yarn.
  1. Molecular structures that are irregular and long are resistant to crystallization and sometimes become transparent.
→ This is how transparent crystalline resin is formed.
  1. Long molecules retain a lumpy texture even when melted.
→ It will not come apart like overcooked noodles.

General-purpose thermoplastic resins used in injection molding have various molecular weight levels (an indicator of molecular length). For example…

  • The molecular weight of polyethylene (PE), used in items like plastic bags, is in the tens of thousands range.

  • The molecular weight of the PE used in elevator guide parts Starlite manufactures is in the millions!

The high-molecular-weight PE, known as ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, is a tough material with excellent sliding properties and outstanding durability. The elements used are the same as in regular PE. But just the molecular length alone makes a huge difference in performance.

The manufacturing process is completely different too. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene does not soften easily even when heated, requiring special processing. We manufacture products using the optimal processing technology tailored to each application.

The key to successful future development lies in selecting the right material for the right application. Please reach out to us if you need help with anything. After all, we are the plastic experts!
